High Five for Friday

The fact that it's pouring rain here today can't ruin the lovely fact that it's FRIDAY.

Boy, we are so happy in our house to finally make it to today.  It's been a crazy, emotional week for us, though there was certainly a lot of good things to focus on as well.

1)  I took the girls to the library Monday.  Emma is having a harder time choosing books lately.  She wants something challenging, yet fun to read.  I've learned I just need to do my research before we head to the library.  You should see me when she chooses a book.  I start searching on my phone for reviews before I let her get it.  And, honestly, we've put MANY books back on the shelves because of reviews I've read.  I think it frustrates Emma, but I want to be careful.  She did check out Christy and is loving it so far.

Olivia checked out five chapter books and has read them all already.  She read two Tuesday night and then came to me with the most serious face and asked if she had been reading too much.  Like she had just eaten too much candy.  That girl.  She makes me laugh.

2)  Our first full week back in school since the holidays has seemed really long.  I knew it would.  Confession:  I don't get 'homework'.  Isn't it just busywork? How necessary is it? Anyway, Em has had her fair share this week.

3)  I made my famous (only to us) Cinnamon Bread this week.  I added a streusel on top that is perfection.  Seriously.  So good.

I only mention that because any other time I've tried to add a streusel topping to this bread, it sunk and messed it up.  Not this time.  Perfection.

4)  Emma and I went shopping this week and brought home a few things to cheer us up ...
It's the simple things :)

5)  The weather was so nice yesterday.  I made the girls go outside to play.

It's not often we have 66* degree weather in January.  We had a bike/scooter race.  I won't say who won.

Haha!

It looks like we're going to have a great weekend.  The high tomorrow is suppose to be 74*. Yippee!!

You'll find us outside :)

So, who won?? heehee

You have probably posted the recipe to your cinnamon bread before but I can't find it.

I don't get homework either. My son has tons of it and spends hours each night working on it. I feel so bad for him. I thought it was just high school.

Oh I feel the same way about homework! Every once in a while my older daughter will have homework on the weekends and that makes me very unhappy.
You bread looks wonderful!
Have a happy weekend!

Hey Diedre...
I often stop by but I am not sure I have commented before. Love the pic of you on the bike!
Has your daughter read the Mandie series before? By Lois Leppard? It might be too young for her.
I remember the first time I read Christy and Julie by Catherine Marshall!!! Loved them!

Lauraine Snelling has some girl books as well as her adult books. Emily loved them. I will ask her for other ideas. It is really hard to find age appropriate books for avid youth readers.

When I was growing up I loved anything by Janet Lambert. They are not christian books, but they are old (out of print, but most libraries have them) but full of fun stories about young girl adventures. Clean and wholesome.

Oh, I also want the bread recipe!

I have an 11 1/2 year old daughter. I think that's similar to Emma? (and a 9 1/2 yr. old daughter too.) :) I have felt and acted the same way as you regarding books that I want my oldest reading or not. I feel good about being careful too. Books that are filled with dialogue that is so sassy is disappointing, let alone bigger, other topics too. Alas, I'd love to share a few of her favorites with you.

Have you heard of Treasures of the Snow, by Patricia St. John?
Completely beautiful and gripping Christian story. I read it as a girl and now with my own daughters we listened to it as an audio book on a long road trip, and it is fabulous. Others by this author are also good, such as Rainbow Garden, etc.

The next three are a little more in the imaginative/ fantasy category, so that may not appeal to everyone. But her favorite book this year is by a Christian author, though the book is not Christian per say, and is titled, The Rise and Fall of Mt. Majestic, by Jennifer Trafton. You can find her on the website, The Rabbit Room which has several neat Christian artists and authors featured.

Two more in the imaginative category:
The Twenty-One Balloons, by William Pene du Bois
The Last of the Really Great Whangdoodles, by Julie Andrews Edwards

Anne of Green Gables and Narnia of course...
Miracles on Maple Hill
Caddie Woodlawn

For Olivia-- has she read The Hundred Dresses, by Eleanor Estes? Amazing story of a young girl's beautiful character.
Or the In Grandma's Attic series by Arleta
Richardson?
The Courage of Sarah Noble
Sarah Whitcher's Story

I enjoy reading your blog because I can relate to a lot of what you say and love picking up good tips and ideas for family related things. : ) Thank you!

Oh, and one more idea for Olivia possibly... if she likes horses, this is a sweet Christian series. Circle C Beginnings, by Susan K. Marlow.
